What is the Difficulty level of the Chola pass with the EBC?

The difficulty level of the Chola Pass with the EBC is moderate to strenuous. It is not the beginner-friendly route as it combines the high altitude, long trekking days, and technical terrain, rather than just distance.

You will be trekking to some of the highest altitudes, such as the Cho La Pass (5,420m), Gokyo Ri (5,357m), and Everest Base Camp (5,364m). At these altitudes, the oxygen level is significantly lower, which increases the risk of altitude sickness and makes even simple walking physically demanding.

The Cho La Pass crossing is the toughest section of the entire journey. It involves a steep ascent over icy terrain, rocky sections, and sometimes glacier crossing. Trekking poles and proper crampon use (depending on season) are often required, and conditions can change quickly.

Daily trekking hours typically range from 6 to 8 hours, sometimes more on difficult sections, with continuous uphill and downhill walking on uneven Himalayan trails.

Chola Pass Trekking Cost 2026 and 2027

The Cho La Pass via EBC cost for 2026 and 2027 generally ranges from USD 1,800 to USD 2,500 per person, depending on the itinerary, group size, and level of service. This package typically includes domestic flights between Kathmandu and Lukla, trekking permits, guide and porter services, accommodation in tea houses, and meals during the trek.

The price can vary slightly based on whether you choose a budget, standard, or premium package. Solo trekkers usually pay more, while group bookings offer better per-person rates. Since this trek covers both the Gokyo Valley and Everest Base Camp via the challenging Cho La Pass, it is slightly more expensive than the standard EBC trek but offers significantly more adventure and scenery value.
