Khopra Ridge Trek - 11 Days Outline Itinerary

The Khopra Ridge Trek, also known as the Khopra Danda Trek, is a moderate trekking route in Nepal’s Annapurna region that leads to Khopra Ridge at 3,640 meters. Unlike the busier trails around popular Annapurna destinations, the route takes you through peaceful Gurung villages, terraced hillsides, rhododendron and oak forests, and high-altitude meadows before reaching the spectacular mountain scenery of Khopra Ridge.

From the ridge, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna mountain ranges, with the landscape changing dramatically from lush green hills and forests at lower elevations to open alpine terrain at higher elevations. The trek can also be extended to Khayer Lake at around 4,500 meters, a sacred Himalayan lake visited by Hindu pilgrims, particularly during Janai Purnima.

Khopra Ridge is worth it for trekkers who want impressive Himalayan views without the crowds of some of the more popular Annapurna trails. Along the way, you experience Gurung culture, quiet mountain villages, changing Himalayan landscapes, and the option to visit the sacred Khayer Lake. This combination of mountain scenery, cultural experiences, peaceful trails, and a high-altitude pilgrimage site makes the Khopra Danda Trek a distinctive alternative to a standard Annapurna trekking experience.

Highlights of Khopra Danda Trek

  • Trek through traditional Gurung and Magar villages and experience their local culture, traditions, food, and warm hospitality.
  • Reach Khopra Ridge at 3,640 meters and enjoy panoramic views of the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and Machhapuchhre ranges.
  • Visit sacred Khayer Lake at around 4,500 meters, an important pilgrimage destination for Hindu devotees, particularly during Janai Purnima.
  • Walk through rhododendron forests, alpine meadows, and terraced hillsides, with changing landscapes as you gain elevation.
  • Experience the quieter side of the Annapurna region on trails that generally see fewer trekkers than the major Annapurna routes.
  • Stay in local teahouses and lodges and experience the simple mountain lifestyle and hospitality along the route.
  • Enjoy changing Himalayan scenery throughout the trek, from green valleys and forested hills to high-altitude ridges and expansive mountain panoramas.

Why Choose Khopra Ridge Trek in Nepal?

There are many reasons to choose the Khopra Ridge Trek in Nepal, especially if you want spectacular mountain scenery without the crowds found on some of the region's more popular trails. From Khopra Ridge, you can enjoy expansive views of the Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and Hiunchuli ranges. Sunrise and sunset are particularly memorable, as the changing light creates dramatic views across the snow-capped peaks.

The trek also takes you through rhododendron forests, terraced villages, alpine meadows, and open ridgelines, giving you a changing landscape throughout the journey. Because the route is generally quieter, you can experience these mountain landscapes and local communities at a more relaxed pace.

Khopra Danda Trek Itinerary

Our 11-day Khopra Danda Trek itinerary begins with your arrival in Kathmandu, followed by a flight to Pokhara and a private drive to Ghandruk, where the trek starts. From Ghandruk, you trek through Dobato and Chistibung to Khopra Ridge, with an acclimatization day at Khopra before descending through Swata and Ulleri to Nayapul. After completing the trek, you drive back to Pokhara and fly to Kathmandu before your final departure.

The itinerary includes accommodation, meals, permits, guide, porter, and transportation arrangements, giving you a complete trekking package without having to organize the logistics yourself.

What Are the Permits Required for the Khopra Danda Trekking in Nepal?

The Khopra Danda Trek requires two permits before starting the trek: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) Card. The ACAP costs NPR 3,000 for foreign trekkers, while the TIMS Card costs NPR 2,000.

To process the permits, you need to provide a valid passport, passport copy, passport-size photographs, and the necessary personal information. If you book the Khopra Ridge Trek with Adventure Vision Treks, we arrange all required permits on your behalf, and the cost of the ACAP and TIMS Card is already included in your package price. You therefore do not need to visit the permit offices or pay additional permit fees during the trek.

What Is the Best Time to Trek the Khopra Danda?

The best time to trek Khopra Danda is during spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). These seasons offer stable weather, clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and excellent views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.

Spring (March–May) brings warm days, clear mountain views, and colorful rhododendron blooms along the trail. It is an excellent choice for trekkers who want to enjoy both mountain scenery and the natural beauty of the forests.

Autumn (September–November) is the best overall season, with dry weather, clear skies, excellent mountain visibility, and comfortable trekking conditions. Winter (December–February) is colder and can bring snow at higher elevations, while monsoon (June–August) brings rain, slippery trails, clouds, and limited mountain views.

You do not need technical climbing skills, but a reasonable level of fitness and regular walking or hiking experience will help you handle the changing terrain and altitude comfortably.

Trekking with a licensed guide, staying properly hydrated, and maintaining a steady pace help make the journey safer and more enjoyable.

Do I need travel insurance, and should it cover helicopter evacuation?
