Short Itinerary

The Upper Mustang trek is a journey into Nepal’s most mysterious and captivating region, often called the “Forbidden Kingdom.” Starting from Jomsom, the trail winds through the dramatic Kali Gandaki valley, passing arid canyons, eroded cliffs, and vibrant villages like Chhusang, Chele, and Tangye, before reaching the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang.

You need to traverse 120–150 kilometers over 10–14 days, walking mostly moderate trails that rise gradually from 2,700 meters to 3,840 meters, allowing time for proper acclimatization. Along the way, the valley reveals its secrets: Tibetan-style monasteries, colorful mud-brick houses, mysterious caves, yak caravans, and breathtaking views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Nilgiri.

The journey can also be done partly by jeep for those seeking comfort, or by helicopter for a short, luxurious journey, but walking the trail provides the most authentic experience of Mustang’s stark yet mesmerizing landscapes.

Entering Upper Mustang requires special permits to preserve its fragile environment and unique culture. Foreign trekkers need a Restricted Area Permit (USD 500 for 10 days, plus USD 50 per extra day) and an ACAP permit (NPR 3,000 / $23 for foreigners), while Nepali trekkers require minimal formalities.

The trek’s difficulty is moderate, with dry, dusty paths and occasional strong winds, making hydration, pacing, and acclimatization essential. The region is best visited in spring (March–May) or fall (September–November) when the weather is clear, trails are dry, and landscapes are at their most vivid. Whether exploring Lo Manthang Palace, Chhoser Cave Monastery, Kali Gandaki Gorge, or simply absorbing the rich Tibetan culture and traditions, the Upper Mustang trek offers a rare blend of history, adventure, and natural beauty, making it one of Nepal’s most rewarding trekking experiences.

Upper Mustang Trek Itinerary

The Upper Mustang trek is a journey into a land where time seems to have paused. Trekkers usually start from Jomsom, following the winding Kali Gandaki valley, passing through villages like Chhusang, Chele, and Tangye, before finally reaching the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang.

Each day brings a new discovery: Tibetan monasteries, traditional mud-brick homes, and dramatic landscapes. Most itineraries range from 10 to 13 days, allowing enough time to acclimatize, explore hidden caves, and experience the rich culture and traditions of the region.

Upper Mustang Trek Cost

Trekking in Upper Mustang is a premium experience due to its restricted status and limited permits. For foreign trekkers, expect the cost to range from USD 1,200 to 2,000 per person, depending on accommodation style and inclusions. This usually covers guide and porter services, meals, accommodation, transportation, and permits. Nepalese trekkers enjoy a lower cost, with fewer formalities, but still the same magical landscapes. Helicopter tours, luxury lodges, or private arrangements will naturally increase the budget.

Upper Mustang Trek Distance

The Upper Mustang trek covers roughly 120 to 150 kilometers round-trip, depending on your exact route. Trekkers typically walk 15–20 km per day, making it a moderate daily distance. The trail meanders along the arid valley floors, past canyons, cliffs, and colorful villages, giving plenty of opportunities for photography, culture stops, and acclimatization.

Upper Mustang Trek Difficulty

While the Upper Mustang trek is moderate to challenging, it is less strenuous than high Himalayan expeditions like Everest or Annapurna. The trails are mostly well-defined, but the dry, arid environment and occasional dusty winds require endurance and good hydration. Acclimatization is essential, especially when approaching Lo Manthang at 3,840 meters. Anyone with reasonable fitness can enjoy the trek if they pace themselves and follow the itinerary carefully.

Upper Mustang Trek Altitude

Trekkers ascend from Jomsom at 2,700 meters to the highest point near Lo Manthang at 3,840 meters. The gradual rise in altitude reduces the risk of serious altitude sickness, but some may still feel mild symptoms like headaches or shortness of breath. Proper acclimatization, hydration, and rest days are highly recommended to fully enjoy the cultural and natural wonders of Mustang.

Upper Mustang Valley

The Upper Mustang valley is often called the “Forbidden Kingdom”, a hidden desert-like landscape framed by the towering peaks of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Nilgiri. Ochre cliffs, eroded canyons, and caves dot the valley, while yak caravans and Tibetan-style villages add life to this seemingly arid terrain. Every turn of the trail offers a view that feels both ancient and untouched, making the valley one of Nepal’s most unique trekking regions.

Upper Mustang Trek by Jeep

For those short on time or seeking a more comfortable journey, Upper Mustang can be explored by jeep. Starting from Pokhara or Jomsom, you can drive through the Kali Gandaki valley, stopping at key villages along the way. While faster, the jeep trip still allows a glimpse of Lo Manthang, monasteries, and caves, but it misses the immersive experience of walking through the breathtaking landscapes. Most travelers combine jeep rides with short treks for the best of both worlds.

Upper Mustang Trek Permit Cost

Entering Upper Mustang requires special permits. For foreign trekkers, the Restricted Area Permit (RAP) costs USD 500 for the first 10 days and USD 50 per extra day, while the ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Project) permit costs NPR 3,000 (USD 23) for foreigners and NPR 1,000 for SAARC and Chinese citizens. Nepalese trekkers are exempt from RAP but must carry proper ID. These permits help conserve the fragile ecosystem and protect local traditions.

Upper Mustang Trek Duration

A typical Upper Mustang trek lasts 10 to 13 days, including travel, acclimatization, and exploration in Lo Manthang. Shorter trips of 7–8 days are possible if you start with a helicopter tour or jeep ride, but a longer trek allows a more relaxed pace, deeper cultural immersion, and better enjoyment of the scenic desert landscapes, monasteries, and caves that make Mustang unforgettable.

When the weather is at its best and offers the best trekking experience, spring and fall are the ideal seasons to begin the Upper Mustang trip. The area comes alive with vivid blooms and gentle warmth from March to May in the summer, providing pleasant days for exploration. The horizon and stunning vistas of the neighboring mountains appear. These seasons' days are typically dry, making moving through the higher mustangs' dry patches easier.

It can be difficult because there is a chance of considerable rainfall during the rainy season (June to August), which makes the routes slick and unfit for hiking. When hiking, travelers may enjoy Upper Mustang's cultural and natural treasures in the most tranquil and stunning environments in the spring or fall.
